Reasons to visit Ho Chi Minh City.
There are many reasons to visit Ho Chi Minh City, even though Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam. Arguably, Ho Chi Minh City should be your first stop. Here are three main reasons to make a beeline to the city also known as Saigon and long considered as the Pearl of the Far East.
1. Try the best coffee in the world
This is one of the many reasons to visit Ho Chi Minh city.
The first one is a cup of black coffee or “cà phê đen” – the Vietnamese equivalent of Americano.
Here in Vietnam, especially in Sai Gon we are used to drinking drip coffee. Hot water runs through ground coffee powder in an aluminum drip filter called “Phin cà phê”. The slower the drip flow, the stronger the taste at the end.
A common combination for a cup of coffee here is “milk coffee with ice” or “cà phê sữa đá”. While it shares a similar taste with “white coffee” that you can easily find in other South East Asia countries, our version uses condensed milk. It is this combo of strong and bitter coffee, blended with sweet and creamy condensed milk, that forms our famous Vietnamese drink.
Next, we have “Egg coffee” or “cà phê trứng”. Black coffee is mixed with whipped egg yolk and condensed milk. The result is a tasty, creamy, custardy warm cup of coffee that makes you hard to avoid a second helping. This drink originated from the North of Vietnam and is most popular there.
The variety of Vietnamese coffee is not only in the way we serve them. Weasel coffee has a vanilla aroma and smooth and sweet after-taste and is easier to drink than Robusta coffee.
I would like to highly recommend that Runam Bistro is one of the best places in Ho Chi Minh City for you to enjoy a cup of great coffee. It is located by Mac Thi Buoi Street, District 1. You can find all kind of coffee in this store with special recipes.
2. The paradise for street food lovers.
Showcasing dozens of different dishes all in the space of a couple of hundred meters. Vạn Kiếp Street straddles the border of two of Saigon’s most vibrant districts, Phu Nhuan and Binh Thanh. There are a variety of street foods here such as “phở, bánh canh cua (kind of noodles with beef and crabs), bread, crepe, Hue beef noodles, ect… There must be at least fifty different dishes available on this street, and over a hundred eateries to choose from. This is the second reason to visit Ho Chi Minh City.
Grilled octopus (bạch tuộc nướng), which is very popular with the trendy Saigon youth at the moment. The spicy, marinated octopus is grilled over a coal barbecue on the sidewalk; the scented smoke wafts into the street, enticing all who pass to stop and eat. Try it at 63 Van Kiep street.
One of the most specialty street food is bánh xèo (savory crepes filled with pork and bean sprouts). Dozens of places serve small bánh xèo cooked on circular trays over flaming, coal-fired barbecues. The most delicious dishes which you can find in Block H restaurant, Su Van Hanh Street.
Head to Ốc Oanh (534 Vĩnh Khánh Street) for seafood and shellfish. This is the most famous of all the seafood joints on the street. Try the fried sea snails with salt and chilly; and the grilled scallops with spring onions and peanuts.
For youngsters who want to drink milkshakes and juice in Sai Gon. There are a variety of stores which are famous for milkshake such as Effoc, Gong Cha, or Sharetea, ect,… Especially popular is mango and black tea flavor.
3. Beautiful Mekong Delta
One of the famous places you should visit Ho Chi Minh city is the attractive landscapes of Mekong Delta. This is definitely one of the main reasons to visit Ho Chi Minh City. If you want to enjoy the peace of nature, Mekong Delta is the best choice for you to discover this fascinating land.
A few hours outside of Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta can be found through the gorgeous countryside. A world away from the busy streets of Saigon, this site will give you an entirely different perspective of Vietnam altogether. Surrounded by the vast maze of rivers, rice paddies, swampland and green foliage, the Mekong Delta should be at the top of your list of things to see in Vietnam.
The Mekong Delta is the ‘rice bowl of Vietnam’ and cruising past the riverside villages, orchards, and rice paddies is an unforgettable experience. The biggest floating market in the Mekong Delta, Cai Rang Market. There is a bridge here that serves as a great vantage point for photography to visit when you come to Ho Chi Minh City. The market is best around 6 am to 7 am, and it’s well worth getting there early to beat the boatloads of tourists.
Most of the boats are loaded with a lot of agricultural products and specialties of the Mekong River Delta such as vegetables, coconuts, bananas, watermelons, grapefruits, dragon fruits and so on. Small boats which sell drinks and food for breakfast which you can find side by side the many sellers ready to serve the market-goers and visitors.
To Cai Rang Floating Market, visitors will witness the fun the style in which the sellers sell their goods by throwing their products to their buyers from boat to boat. Visitors can also observe floating houses of the locals along the riverside.
Cai Rang Floating Market is an attractive destination for visitors, especially international visitors to explore river life of Southern people.
